Théâtre de l'épée de bois - n°4/10 (38cm bord large) + 1 AP
I shot this picture while doing a series on parisian theaters.
Among 2500 pictures, i selected 65 pictures among which i choose 14 for the exhibition i did then. Among these 14 photographs i think two are magical. And this picture is one of the two.
When you look at it first, it looks beautiful with the brown velvet and the details on the wall. With the neon lights and the geometry of the forms, you see the beauty. But then, it feels a little strange ... a curtain ? ... in the middle of a wall ? ... what is this ?!
I like the ambiguity of it, there is room for the viewer to project his imagination on the photograph which, despite being figurative like all photgraphs, offers a space for fantasy to the viewer who finishes to build the picture in his head and understand it his way.
The photograph was taken in the rehearsal room of the Theatre de l'epee de bois in the Cartocuherie de Vincennes, a group of theaters in the Vincennes woods near Paris.
This photograph was exhibited at "Making strange" exhibition at Praxis gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA in 2020. The exhibition was curated by Douglas Beasley and the picture received an honorable mention by the juror.
